Weather Center

Hello, welcome back to another WC blog! We got a big one for you today, and we will be covering some crazy footage and discussing the devastation of the Derecho back on Aug 10, 2020 and also talk about the surprising storm over in DFW on Aug 16th! Let’s dive in…

August 16, 2020 Storm

Lightning Montage

Many said the storm came out of nowhere. And what a storm is was. It started out as a sunny humid day. About 102 degrees in the DFW area. Then at around 1-2 PM, cumulonimbus clouds began growing upwards and getting fueled by the later afternoon convection. Soon, noticeably dark clouds began to appear around 4:30 PM for northern DFW. A cold front was moving down south around Louisiana and the left side of the plummeting front began to form some wicked storms. Growing into very strong thunderstorms producing up to 75 MPH wind gusts and some cases Tennis Ball size hail, it hit Northern Collin County at around 5:50 PM. Moving S/W quickly, it hit Denton, southern Collin, Dallas, and Rockwall county at around 6:45 PM with 60 MPH wind gusts and quarter size hail in some places. The lighting show was spectacular. Take a look at the WFAA Radar at 6:35 PM (posted by Jesse Hawila on Facebook)

After the storm, many were saying they saw a tornado or funnel cloud over Frisco and/or Allen area. Check out this video from Anand C. Venkataramani as he drove through the Frisco area!

He said that the wind was very strong as it was beating against his car. This was not a tornado nor was it a funnel cloud. This is just a low lying cloud that lowered from the cloud deck (the main clouds above) This could very well be a Shelf cloud or perhaps a wall cloud. But Radar never indicated a funnel or much rotation at all. Never the less, this was quite a storm. Tree and structural damage was recorded widespread over DFW and power outages for many as well.
