Winter Weather This Week

DFW this week will be facing its first winter weather event this year! This blog will cover WHAT will happen, WHEN it will happen, and HOW to prepare. Please read carefully so you can best prepare your home and be safe during what could take place.

Winter Storm Watch

Much of DFW is currently under a Winter Storm Watch until Friday morning. Now before we get too far into the blog, I would like to point out:

Travel conditions will be potentially very poor and dangerous. Please do not travel Thursday especially, if at all possible. The main threats will be ice/sleet accumulation

Wednesday

This storm will be arriving in DFW around Wednesday late afternoon. The storm will not be as significant during the daytime hours of Wednesday for sure. Many may not see much since the temperatures in their area may not be below freezing yet. Most of DFW will have issues early Thursday morning through the rest of the day. Temperatures will drop below freezing around Wednesday evening and won’t rise above freezing until Friday for most areas in DFW.

Thursday

Now these are when the problems will most likely arise. Temperatures will be quite cold and well below freezing for the entire day, and almost 100% coverage of the metroplex is expected for mixed precipitation. The forecasts show potentially .5-1.5 inches of sleet/ice possible for a portion of DFW. Refer to the following maps. Then, as the afternoon nears, the forecasts show less and less mixed precipitation and more snow accumulation. Snow accumulation is not expected to exceed 1-2 inches in most places. Some portions of DFW may not see very much snow at all, just mostly ice.

Will I lose power?

There will be plenty of people in DFW that will not lose power, but that is not to say none will. Whenever an area has freezing rain or sleet, tree branches can break off and damage power lines… or power lines can be damaged by the ice. This results in certain areas experiencing blackouts. WC expects this to happen for sure, especially with areas more north of DFW. Refer to the top right map. For right now, just prepare like you will lose power for just at least a small period of time.

Make sure you are ready for this storm! Expect travel impacts, electrical impacts, etc. Prepare extra, even if it turns out you didn’t need to as much as you thought. It’s better to be safe than in danger and no time left.
