It’s August 2022 already, can you believe it?! This month has so much in store for Texas ranging from a Supermoon, an amazing Saturn sighting, a meteor shower, and hopefully some rain to alleviate this Texas drought!
Supermoon on August 11
On the night of August 11, the moon will rise around 8:35 pm CDT. The moon will appear much larger than normal and it will also have a hint of orange to it. At 10:55 PM CDT it will make a close pass right by Saturn which could be a great telescope shot.
Perseids Meteor Shower August 11-12
This is the long awaited annual meteor shower of 2022, considered one of the best showers to watch all year! For areas with minimal light pollution, you can expect to see anywhere between 50-100 meteors per hour. Unfortunately since there will also be a full moon on the same night, the numbers are going to be significantly lower… especially for folks in dense city areas with lots of light pollution. Its still worth a shot to look for meteors though! Remember to prepare for the weather appropriately during your star gazing and to also let your eyes adjust to the darkness for about 20 minutes before the shower begins.
Saturn Sighting on August 14
Saturn will be much larger, clearer, and brighter than usual on this day. Make sure to grab a telescope or some binoculars if you have one and find Saturn! It will appear in the southeastern sky at twilight just after sunset and rise slowly after dark. The best viewing time will be between twilight and the first bit of dark.
