Winter Weather This Week DFW

DFW is at risk for a multi-day winter weather event! As temperatures plummet today on Sunday and with plenty of precipitation coming this week, we can expect several winter weather events to occur around the metroplex. Let’s go day by day to see what DFW can expect!

Monday

Monday for DFW could see some patchy showers in the afternoon around 1-4 PM. Temperatures will be hovering just above freezing so we can’t rule out sleet or mixed precipitation. Monday itself though doesn’t pose a major threat to DFW, as of now.

Tuesday

Tuesday is when DFW could get the most action. Temperatures will be below freezing or near freezing much of the day. Freezing rain and ice formation are the major risks for the day. Many roadways could build up ice, and black ice is a big concern as well. Because back ice is transparent and hard to see on roadways, it is such a major danger for travel.

Some areas of DFW could experience different types of precipitation, especially at different parts of the day. Snow is not very likely, simply because of how the temperature contours in the atmosphere are during this week. Freezing rain and sleet are the most likely scenarios. Freezing rain is one of the worst precipitation types because of its tendency to stick to tree limbs, power lines, and other elements and cause significant issues.

Wednesday

Wednesday, temperatures will jump back up to the 40’s, but the early morning still poses a threat for icing and freezing rain.

Thursday

Thursday as of now has the least amount of chance for winter weather, but WC is keeping an eye on it. If things change, make sure to go to WC’s Winter Weather Group!

Remember the 4 P’s!

Plants – Put heavy warm blankets over your plants. With this extreme cold, your plants won’t stand a chance without proper protection. Take in all delicate plants to keep them alive.
Pets – If you own any pets, do not let them wander outdoors for extended periods of time or be unsupervised! Temperatures this low can be extremely hazardous for your pet!
Pipes – Cover your outdoor pipes properly! Temperatures close to zero can produce more issues than just to your outdoor pipes. Make sure to set all your external faucets in your house or apartment to drip slowly to prevent freezes in the pipeline! For pool owners, make sure to run your pool equipment through these low temperatures in order to prevent freezes! Cover your equipment with heavy warm blankets to provide better protection.
People – Last of all and most importantly, protect yourself and others! Make sure your neighbors have what they need to get through this cold and that they won’t go out during these frigid temperatures unprepared. Minimize trips outdoors and wear proper clothing to keep warm. Hypothermia can set quickly especially with wind chills in the negatives.
