winter

As all North Texans want to know every year, will it snow this year in DFW? If so, how much and when? Let’s dive in and start with the forecast for the rest of November and December this year 2023.

December Forecast

COLD – December will be slightly colder than average for Texas. Be sure to be prepared for colder weather and practice the 4 P’s!
STORMY – December will start quite stormy, with more precipitation expected than average. Several storms could be severe, depending on the low-pressure systems that will be present around Texas during the month of December.

Winter for 2023 officially starts on Thursday, December 21st, but Meteorological Winter starts on December 1st. For Texas, the month of December will be average temperature, if not a little bit colder than average. The month of December for Texas will also start quite stormy. Extended weather forecasts call for possible blizzard conditions blowing snow into areas as close as Oklahoma and Arkansas. There is a chance of snow in December, but for now, it is fairly low and not much of a concern for WC. The first chance of snow if it were to happen could occur either the 1st or 2nd week of December.

Will there be a white Christmas in North Texas? As of this moment in time, there is only a <10% chance of 1+ inches of snow on Christmas day for North Texas.

January – March 2024

UNSEASONABLY COLD – Much of January – March could be much colder than average for Texas. Be sure to be prepared for cold weather and practice the 4 P’s as always! Be sure you are able to minimize the time outdoors this winter to protect your health from the cold temperatures!
STORMY – Much of January – March could continue to be quite stormy, with more precipitation expected than average. Storms could be severe, but less of a chance than it was in December since temperatures will be colder and severe weather does not flourish in cold temperatures alone.
SNOW STORMS – Some of January – March has a few snow storms possible, including ice storms as well depending on how the atmosphere turns out to be like when the time comes. Not everyone will see snow this year, but there is a good chance for North Texas to see above-average winter weather for the winter of 2024. The first snow storm could occur as early as mid-January for North Texas.

Why is it going to be colder and wetter this 2024 Winter? This year, El Nino is in place heading into winter for the first time in four years, driving the outlook for warmer-than-average temperatures for the northern tier of the continental United States and much colder temperatures for the south including North Texas. To be more specific, DFW has a 40-70% chance of being colder than average between January and April.

North Texans will definitely need to bundle up due to unseasonably cold weather expected for Texas throughout January and February, with a possible major winter storm in mid-January. It is too far out to know details about these possible snow storms but what is known is that there is one possible in mid-January and mid-February. February will be unseasonably cold and wet, with potentially another snow storm, and possible ice storms. March again will be colder than average, and offer more rain. The chance of snow is uncertain in March for Texas.
