Hurricane Season 2024

NOAA’s outlook for the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season, which spans from June 1 to November 30, predicts an 85% chance of an above-normal season, a 10% chance of a near-normal season and a 5% chance of a below-normal season. NOAA is also forecasting a range of 17 to 25 total named storms. Of those, 8 to 13 are forecasted to become hurricanes, including 4 to 7 major hurricanes of at least CAT 3 or higher.

This is above-average activity. For example, an average year for Hurricane Season is about 14 named storms, 7 hurricanes, and 3 major hurricanes.

This season could potentially be one of the most active seasons on record. This hyperactivity is caused by warmer-than-normal Atlantic Ocean temperatures. The Atlantic Ocean is approximately 5-7 degrees warmer than average across the majority of the Atlantic basin. Another reason this season could be hyperactive is because of the La Nina that has been dominant over the past several months over North America. This current environment provides perfect conditions for hurricane development.

So what does this mean for you? First, WC would like to encourage you to read its page on Hurricane Safety. It is good to know especially if you live near a coast. If you don’t live near the coast, forward the page to a friend who does so that they could have access to this potentially life-saving information.

Also, track WC on Facebook to see when hurricane models are released from WC! Posts will be made as often as possible on major storms. For example, this was WC’s first post using its new hurricane model graphic. All of these posts can be found on WC’s Facebook or on our Live Feed page!

Be safe this hurricane season everyone! Stay tuned to updates and pay attention to your local news as we go full throttle into this potentially historic hurricane season!
