Heads up North Texas! The Space Weather Prediction Center has issued a G4 watch for a severe, magnetic storm. This means the northern lights could be visible as far south as Texas and Florida! There is no guarantee we will see anything in North Texas since the northern lights are very difficult to track, but there is a pretty good chance.
Be sure to head out after sunset and venture out away from city lights into the darkest area you can find if you can. Because Texas is still so far south, we will only be able to see “light pillars”, which are colorful lights visible on the northern horizon. We will most likely NOT be able to see the typical overhead northern lights that look like waves. If you can’t see anything with your naked eyes, try taking a photo using the Night Mode feature on your phone.
The northern lights will come in waves so be patient. Keep checking TWC’s Facebook to stay updated on when the lights are expected, or check out this graph on SWPC’s website and watch for any spike in the graph, which is an indication that the show will begin within the next 30-60 minutes!
