Increasing Winter Storm Potential for Texas

By this evening, temperatures will drop below freezing for North Texas, with some areas hitting the low 20s to upper teens. Due to gusty winds with this cold front, wind chills will drop into the single digits in some areas in DFW overnight into Monday morning! Remember the 4 P’s, this is your last chance!

❄️WINTER STORM POTENTIAL FOR TEXAS❄️

TWC is monitoring the potential for a winter storm for North Texas on Thursday and Friday this week. The US National Weather Service Fort Worth Texas still has North Texas at about a 70% chance for winter weather, same as yesterday. They did however highlight the DFW region as having an increasing potential for snowfall accumulation. They are still very unsure about the severity of the storm, accumulation amounts, and what kind of precipitation North Texas will see (snow, sleet, freezing rain). We just know there is a high chance of a winter storm.

Your weather apps might be showing over 5-7 inches of snowfall in DFW on Thursday and Friday. Don’t trust the accumulation amounts yet though, we can’t know for sure what is possible yet! Not saying its not possible, we just need more data first. The latest EURO model does show quite the setup for snow!

Power Outage Issue

The next big question you may ask may be, “will there be widespread power outages again?” The short answer is, “maybe”. The long answer is complicated due to many factors. The bottom line is that the operational forecasting supervisor of the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) said if severe cold snaps occur in Texas—similar to the February 2021 storm—there is an 80% likelihood of blackouts affecting more than 27 million customers across Texas. This would not be good news if Texas indeed does face record cold and snowfall/ice. Although, according to the latest ERCOT monthly report, the grid has added 10,000 MW of new generation capacity since last winter to help sustain power across Texas. ERCOT has also conducted 2,892 new inspections of the grid system since the 2021 storm.

I’ll be watching for the latest model run data and post that when its ready. Stay tuned for more updates as model data becomes more refined!
