Wiki Says Derechos are:
A derecho is a widespread, long-lived, straight-line wind storm that is associated with a fast-moving group of severe thunderstorms known as a mesoscale convective system and potentially rivaling hurricanic and tornadic forces. Derechos can cause hurricane-force winds, tornadoes, heavy rains, and flash floods.
Weather Center Says:
Derechos are associated with bands of rapidly moving severe thunderstorms sometimes different types like bow echoes, squall lines. They come as an intense wall-like wind storm that is long lasting and very damaging. Some winds can be as powerful as 145+ MPH winds, and the overall life of the storm spanning from over 7-24 hours long!
When does a severe storm become a Derecho?
By definition, if most of the destructive wind damage from a storm extends for more than 250 miles (this includes a storm filled with many supercell/strong severe storms in a linear form), includes wind gusts of at least 58 mph along most of its length and/or its bowing section, and also includes several well-separated 75 mph (121 km/h) or greater gusts, then the event may be classified as a derecho!

What can Derechos do?
Cause extreme damage on property, trees, and other things. The very dangerous winds can catch the many millions that may be in its path off guard! A derecho can sometimes act as hurricanes on land which can destroy and damage everything in its path and its path may go on for 100’s of miles!
How often do they occur?
